magazine monday: what’s your decorating style?
Friday evening after I left the studio, I curled up in our leather chair and flipped through a few magazines while I waited for Michael to get home from work. I was excited to read the newest issue of Real Simple that came before I left for North Carolina last week. When I got to the “What’s Your Decorating Style?” Quiz (on page 158 for you Real Simple junkies!) I delightfully began the visual test.
The idea is to identify the images to which you are most drawn and see what style your cluster of images represent. It didn’t take long looking at my answers to determine that my style is considered “Cozy Casual.” Michael walked in the door and I was so enthralled with the quiz, that I handed it to him to take, not giving any thought to the fact that most of the items on the page were quite feminine- heels, earrings, a dress, etc. After we had a quick laugh about that, he assured me that our style was very “Cozy Casual.” Like me, he was drawn to the Le Creuset French Oven and the leather chair – two of the more gender-neutral items featured in the quiz. He suggested I use the quiz for my next Magazine Monday with Meredith… brilliant ideas like that is just one of the 3,847,612 reasons why I love that guy.
Yes, after looking around our little cape, we concluded that we are very much the “Cozy Casual” couple: simple patterns, comfy chairs, a roll-arm sofa and plenty of throws to keep us warm.
Our cozy little house is certainly low maintenance and built for daily life, as the article says. Daily life and a 90 pound black lab.
In addition to explaining the different styles (Sophisticated Classic, Modern Graphic, Cozy Casual, Vintage Electic, the article also makes suggestions on where to shop and look for inspiration based on your natural style. According to the Real Simple writers, I should be shopping at Crate & Barrel (check!) Libeco Home, Maine Cottage, Pine Cone Hill (check!) and Pottery Barn (check!). Per their suggestion, I also just added Brilliant Asylum, Portabellopixie, and Small Place Style to my Google Reader.

All I had to do was read that “Cozy Casual” was an option, and the test was over for me. Now I just have to get our house out of its current “70′s hand-me-down” stage so it actually reflects that. :)

Right now, we are in the budget cozy casual as well. Most of our stuff has been found inexpensivly or handed down, but we love it. I do daydream of a day when I will be able to change over to fresher things though!
