A few weeks ago I bookmarked the recipe for Bourbon-Soaked Cherries in the December issue of Martha Stewart Living, as I thought they might make the perfect DIY gifts for a few of our friends! Michael and I had the chance to make jars of these on Friday and we distributed them to a variety of our friends in Portland over the weekend. They’ve been quite a hit so far, and we’re terribly sorry we didn’t buy enough cherries or jars for ourselves!

To make: bring 1C bourbon and 2T sugar to a simmer, stirring until dissolved. Then pour bourbon over 4oz. dried cherries in a glass jar and let stand over night. It’s that simple! You may enjoy these decadent cherries in your favorite cocktails, over ice cream, in cookies & brownies, etc. (The cherries should be stored in the refrigerator for 2 months.)

How cute are these ‘handmade with <3′ tags from Parrott Design Studio? Michael wrote the tags for our friends’ jars, including a favorite recipe for an Old Fashioned.

I was flipping through my newest magazines last night, trying to decide what to take on for today’s Magazine Monday, when I saw this recipe for a prosciutto & egg baguette in the January issue of Martha Stewart Living. After skimming the list of ingredients, I was excited to see that I’d be able to pick up everything I needed for the recipe from the bakery & the market located just down our block! (I love not having to get in the car to get groceries!)

Michael & I just finished a few pieces for lunch and we both loved it! Judging by his going back for more (and more!) I think Michael liked it a lot. We think it’d be the perfect addition to a festive brunch!

All you need to do is: slice the top 1/4 inch off of the baguette, cut into pieces, and set aside. Then hollow out the bottom of the bread (the soft part) and whisk together 5 eggs, a bit of lemon zest,3 T milk, 1/4C parsley (my market didn’t have this, so I had to leave it out), 1/2C parmesan, salt and pepper. Once those ingredients are whisked together, stir in the pieces of bread from the top of the loaf. Place the baguette on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, with the prosciutto slices lining the inside of the bread. Carefully fill the baguette with the egg mixture and bake for about 30 minutes at 350°, until the eggs have become puffy. Then . . . enjoy!

They’re super easy to make: simply cut sprigs of greenery and assemble around the front, back, and inside of an embroidery hoop, using hot glue. Then hang them with the ribbon of your choice!

Today’s feature is not only one of the most delicious recipes I’ve made in a long time, it is also both easy & fun! You simply can’t beat fun + easy + delicious, right?

Danny Cohen of Danny Macaroons shares his coconut macaroon recipe in the latest issue of Food & Wine. The minute I saw it, I bookmarked the page. I love any and all macaroons, so trying these chocolate-dipped goodies seemed like a perfect fit for me! Michael and I made the macaroons themselves last night and I just finished coating them in chocolate. I couldn’t recommend this recipe more- you must put these macaroons on your holiday baking list this year! Enjoy!

Today’s Magazine Monday is perhaps a bit more special than most. The recipe comes from Issue No. 1 of Baker’s Notes, a publication from our beloved neighborhood bakery, Scratch Baking Co. Given that we live just steps away from the head of Willard Square, home to Scratch, Michael & I visit the bakery a lot. Maybe a little too much . . . We’ve often remarked that Scratch is one of the main reasons we love our neighborhood as much as we do. The culture and village-like atmosphere it has helped to create within the square over the years is something truly remarkable.

The first issue of Baker’s Notes was published earlier this summer and was an instant hit with all of our neighborhood friends! After visiting the bakery several times a week for over three years, we appreciated reading the story behind the bakery from the perspective of each of the three owners. Their narratives were inspiring, humorous, and real- reading them only strengthened our love for this incredibly unique bakery.

For my first attempt at recreating the deliciousness that is Scratch’s baked goods, I decided to try the Banana Bread from Issue No. 1. It was high time to mix things up, as I’ve been following this recipe from Flour’s Joanne Chang for over five years now. The recipe was super simple, but included helpful, thoughtful tips that are often forgotten, such as not over-mixing or else the bread will be a bit tough.

Although it certainly wasn’t the most beautiful loaf, the banana bread itself was delicious- a perfect Monday afternoon snack, and it’s bound to be a scrumptious breakfast accompaniment over the next couple of days. I’ve already got my eyes on a few other Scratch-inspired recipes: the Shiny Fudge Monster Brownies and the Cinnamon Sugar Graham Crackers. Issue No. 2 was released earlier this month and is just as delightful as its predecessor! You may pick up your own copies of both issues HERE.

As promised, here are this year’s Magazine Monday pumpkins. Inspired by the pumpkins in so many of my October issues, Michael & I grabbed the knives and had some fun with these pumpkins. To change it up a little, this year I went the traditional route and carved my own, instead of painting. With Michael’s help, I think we came up with some pretty great jack-o-lanterns!

Michael & I are crazy about our Wayfarers, so I particularly love his ‘too cool’ sunglasses-wearing pumpkin. But let’s be honest, the real show stealer is the Orvis pumpkin. Too bad he liked the taste of it more than the look of it . . .

Magazine Monday is back! During the month of September I took an unintentional hiatus from writing Magazine Monday blog posts, and almost considered making it a permanent thing, until I realized how many of my favorite discoveries have come directly out of Magazine Mondays. I make Gwyneth’s blueberry muffins way too much, the Real Simple apple pie I tried in 2009 has become my go-to pie recipe, and who can forget Michael’s stellar pumpkins from last year? I have decided to keep up with my Magazine Monday posts, but I’ll still probably take a Monday off every now & then.

For this week’s Magazine Monday, I want to share what I consider to be the perfect fall cocktail, from the eighth issue of Matchbook Magazine. (Coincidentally, the ninth issue of Matchbook launched today- go check it out!) All you need is a cup of apple cider, a splash of rum, lemon juice, and maple syrup! We made these for two different sets of friends last week, and everyone agreed that it was, in fact, quite delicious!

The perfect fall cocktail paired with the perfect fall flowers, dahlias!

Happy October!

I am always up for a quick DIY all-natural skin care project in the name of Magazine Mondays! This month’s featured DIY skin care recipe from Whole Living was too good to pass up: a honeydew melon, oatmeal, mint scrub. Doesn’t that just sound like the perfect end to a summer’s day?

I used the mixture on both my face and my feet and enjoyed the most lovely refreshing feeling! It’s definitely not the Vivo Cleansing Gel I bought from 2 Note last week (that I am clearly obsessed with!) but it’s a fun, DIY alternative.
